Ethiopia has confirmed a new case of Marburg virus disease, the first reported in 10 days, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 14, the Ministry of Health said Friday.
In a statement issued on Dec. 12, the ministry said one additional case was recorded, marking the first confirmation since Dec. 2.
The newly confirmed patient is currently under medical follow-up at Jinka General Hospital in the South Ethiopia Region, the ministry said, without providing further details on the individual’s condition.
The latest case raises the total number of confirmed Marburg virus infections to 14 since the outbreak was first detected in Jinka town.
According to the ministry, 1,765 laboratory tests have been conducted nationwide so far, with 14 people testing positive for the virus. Of the confirmed cases, eight people have died, while four have recovered.
The ministry added that two patients are currently receiving medical treatment after testing positive for the virus.
Following the new confirmation, authorities said surveillance, monitoring, and control measures have been intensified to contain the spread of the virus.
Marburg virus disease is a highly infectious and often fatal illness, transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids.
