The Sudanese army has regained control of the town of Mabsut in South Kordofan following clashes with forces allied with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), local witnesses said on Tuesday.
According to residents who spoke to Anadolu, army units advanced west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali and took control of Mabsut after fighting with elements of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), which has aligned itself with the RSF in various areas.
With the capture of Mabsut, the army now holds all territories west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali, a locality seen as strategically important because it connects the northern and southern parts of South Kordofan and influences military and civilian movement across the region.
Soldiers posted videos online claiming full control of the town, though the army and SPLM-N have not officially commented on the developments.
The move comes two days after the army announced advances west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali following clashes with RSF units.
The RSF currently holds control over all five Darfur states, while the army maintains authority across most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.
Since April 2023, the conflict between the army and the RSF has led to at least 40,000 deaths and displaced over 12 million people, according to the World Health Organization — making it one of the largest displacement crises on the African continent.
