The title race in one of Africa’s most prestigious leagues, the South African Premier Division, has heated up significantly.
The reigning champions of the past eight seasons, Mamelodi Sundowns, top the table with 25 points, while their strongest rivals, Orlando Pirates, have caught up on points despite having a game in hand, thanks to a 2-0 win over Chippa United.
Pirates have gone unbeaten in their last nine league matches. Last season, they also gave Sundowns a tough challenge. This season, having been surprisingly eliminated from the CAF Champions League, they appear to be entering matches more rested and focused.
It’s not just Pirates making a strong case; Kaizer Chiefs, who are in better form compared to previous seasons, are also in the title race.
Despite having a game in hand, they have already collected 22 points. Teams like Sekhukhune, AmaZulu, and TS Galaxy have also started the season strongly and are among the competitive sides.
Sundowns’ long-standing dominance in the league seems to be under real threat for the first time in years.
