Of the 48 teams that will take part in the World Cup, 42 have already been confirmed. Nine of these teams are from Africa.
In addition, the Democratic Republic of Congo will earn the right to become the 10th African team at the tournament if they secure one victory in the play-offs.
According to the latest World Rankings published on Wednesday, 19 November, the pots for the upcoming draw have been determined. Morocco and Senegal will represent the continent in Pot 2.
Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa will enter the draw from Pot 3. Ghana, Cape Verde and potentially the Democratic Republic of Congo will take part from Pot 4.
Under the draw rules, no group may contain more than one team from the same confederation, except UEFA, which has 16 representatives. Each group must feature at least one and no more than two UEFA teams.
The World Cup draw will be held on 5 December in Washington.
