CAF has released the official ranking of African clubs based on their performances over the past five years. Egypt’s Al Ahly FC leads the list as Africa’s most successful team in the last half-decade with 78 points.
Mamelodi Sundowns, who have dominated South African football with consecutive league titles, took second place. Espérance Sportive de Tunis ranked third with 57 points. Last season’s CAF Confederation Cup champions, RS Berkane, finished fourth with 52 points, while Tanzania’s powerhouse Simba SC secured fifth place with 48 points.
Last season’s CAF Champions League winners Pyramids FC are in sixth place with 47 points. The rest of the top ten includes Zamalek SC, Wydad AC, USM Alger, and CR Belouizdad. One of last season’s standout teams, Orlando Pirates, ranked 15th on the list.
The ranking points are based on how far teams advance in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. In the CAF Champions League, champions receive 6 points; finalists 5; semi-finalists 4; quarter-finalists 3; third-placed teams in the group stage 2; and fourth-placed teams 1 point.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, champions earn 5 points; finalists 4; semi-finalists 3; quarter-finalists 2; third-placed group teams 1; and fourth-placed teams 0.5 points.
