Arsenal’s star winger Bukayo Saka has shared the importance he places on Nigerian culture, despite being born in London.
He explained that being Nigerian is one of the most defining aspects of who he is. With both of his parents being Nigerian, the footballer said that his upbringing and his name reflect a deep cultural connection passed down through his family.
The 23-year-old stated that many of the qualities he carries today were shaped by the Nigerian values instilled in him from childhood. In his interview with the BBC, Saka emphasized that his Nigerian identity also plays a significant role in shaping his footballing character.
“My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it.”
“Both of my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values were passed down to me.”
The young Arsenal star has repeatedly expressed pride in both his English and Nigerian identities.
His first name, “Bukayo,” means “adds to happiness” in Yoruba. Saka reflects the meaning of his name through his personality, both on and off the pitch.
