In a statement on Friday, the French Foreign Ministry said citizens should depart via commercial flights rather than by land, noting that major roadways have recently been targeted by terrorist attacks.
The ministry reiterated its standing advisory against all travel to Mali, citing the deteriorating security environment and the expanding reach of militant groups across the country.
Relations between France and Mali have been strained since the 2022 withdrawal of French troops and the Malian junta’s deepening security cooperation with Russia’s Wagner Group. Western embassies have repeatedly warned of escalating risks, particularly in northern and central Mali where insurgent attacks continue to spread.
The French government did not specify how many of its nationals remain in Mali but urged those still in the country to “exercise extreme vigilance” until they are able to leave.
