The UN did not specify when the attack occurred or who was responsible, but it comes amid growing tensions as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reportedly prepare to launch an offensive on El Obeid, while Sudanese army troops gather to defend the city.
“The security situation in the Kordofan region continues to worsen,” OCHA said in its Wednesday statement.
The Kordofan states — North, West, and South — have witnessed escalating clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF in recent weeks. The violence follows the RSF’s capture of Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, on October 26, where the group was accused by local and international organisations of massacring civilians.
Observers warn that the fall of Al Fasher and continued RSF advances could cement a de facto geographic partition of Sudan between rival military forces.
Since the civil war erupted in April 2023, the conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has killed thousands, displaced millions, and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with civilians bearing the brunt of the ongoing violence.
