In a statement released on Friday, the ICJ confirmed that Comoros submitted a declaration on October 29 to intervene in the ongoing case concerning alleged violations of the Genocide Convention in Gaza.
South Africa brought the case before the court in December 2023, accusing Israel of committing genocidal acts during its military campaign in the Gaza Strip. Since then, countries such as Türkiye, Spain, Ireland, Libya, Mexico, and Belgium have also joined the proceedings.
The ICJ has issued several provisional measures, urging Israel to stop actions that could constitute genocide and to ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza.
According to Palestinian health officials, more than 68,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel’s attacks began in October 2023. Although a ceasefire was announced earlier this month under a US-backed peace plan, reports indicate repeated Israeli violations of the truce.
