South African activist and parliamentarian Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, has reportedly been seized by Israeli forces after they intercepted a humanitarian flotilla heading to Gaza in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Mandela was aboard one of the boats that form part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian-led convoy aiming to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza and draw global attention to the worsening humanitarian situation in the territory.
Before the flotilla set sail, Mandela recorded a video message to be released in the event of an interception.
“I’m a citizen of the Republic of South Africa. If you are receiving this video, it means we have been intercepted and abducted by the state of apartheid Israel. I call on our government to exert pressure for my immediate release,” Mandela stated.
South Africa Calls for Adherence to International Law
The South African government expressed grave concern over the reports. Chrispin Phiri, spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), reiterated South Africa’s demand that all parties respect international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
“The safety, security, and physical integrity of all unarmed participants aboard the flotilla, including South African citizens, are of paramount importance,” Phiri emphasized.
He warned that military action in international waters would constitute a serious breach of international norms and highlighted that the flotilla was engaged in a peaceful humanitarian mission.
A Mission of Solidarity
The Global Sumud Flotilla was carrying activists and aid workers from various countries. Other South Africans on board included Fatima Hendricks, Zaheera Soomar, Zukisa Wanner, Reaaz Moola, Bashera Soomar, and Carolyn Shelver.
The mission’s objective was to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, where millions face acute shortages of basic necessities as the conflict continues.
Former MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi praised Mandela’s participation, calling him a “selfless brave soul” and expressing solidarity with the flotilla and the Palestinian cause.
Historical Echoes and Global Reactions
News of Mandela’s capture has triggered a strong response in South Africa and beyond. Many drew historical parallels, noting that another Mandela has once again been detained while standing up for human rights.
Social media platforms saw an outpouring of support under hashtags such as #FreeMandlaMandela and #SumudFlotilla, with activists urging swift diplomatic action for the release of all those detained.
The Israeli authorities have not yet issued a detailed statement on the operation. Human rights organizations are calling for immediate clarification and the safe release of all flotilla participants.
