José Riveiro, who previously managed one of South Africa’s top clubs, Orlando Pirates, and achieved remarkable success there, transferred to Egypt’s historic club Al Ahly at the start of this season.
Riveiro, who took charge at Al Ahly — the club with the most titles in both the Egyptian Premier League and Africa’s premier competition, the CAF Champions League — failed to meet expectations.
The possibility of his dismissal began to be discussed after he oversaw just four league matches. This likelihood increased further following a 2-0 defeat to their title rivals, Pyramids.
Subsequently, the club announced on its official website that the experienced coach had been relieved of his duties:
“The club would like to thank first-team coach José Riveiro and his assistant staff for their efforts during the past period. The contractual relationship has been terminated by mutual consent.”
It is now being speculated that Riveiro could return to Orlando Pirates.
