Ethio Telecom and Huawei have launched the “Solar-on-Tower” project in Ethiopia.
With this project, a new telecommunications network will be powered by solar energy, marking an important step toward the adoption of clean energy solutions.
Additionally, the “Solar-on-Tower” project integrates photovoltaic panels onto telecommunications towers.
This approach addresses challenges such as limited space and land constraints for installing solar power systems in cities.
According to the project’s operations, solar energy usage at the sites can last up to four hours.
The use of diesel generators is reduced from six hours to two hours, resulting in a 40% reduction in fuel consumption per site.
In the capital, Addis Ababa, thousands of sites face space constraints, making it difficult to adopt more energy-efficient technologies such as traditional ground-based photovoltaic solutions.
Therefore, this new project represents the first effective and feasible solution for the telecommunications sector to accelerate the transition from traditional energy to clean energy.
