Bournemouth’s Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo was subjected to racist abuse after Friday’s match against Liverpool.
However, Semenyo stated that the aftermath and the reactions shown painted a very positive picture.
SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY
Merseyside Police announced that the identity of the 47-year-old Liverpool supporter responsible for the abuse had been confirmed, and the individual was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense and taken into custody for questioning.
“THE FOOTBALL WORLD STOOD TOGETHER”
Semenyo also revealed on Instagram that he had received further racist messages after the match.
These comments drew widespread condemnation, and Semenyo emphasized that the sense of solidarity was deeply valuable.
“What I experienced at Anfield last night will stay with me, not because of the words of one person, but because of how the entire football family stood together.
I want to thank my teammates at Bournemouth for supporting me in that moment, the Liverpool players and fans who showed their true character, and the Premier League officials who handled the incident professionally. Football shows its best face when needed.”
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk described the incident as “shameful,” while Premier League CEO Richard Masters stated that anyone found guilty of racist abuse would be banned from stadiums and prosecuted. Such statements reinforced Semenyo’s message.
Semenyo also made a decisive impact on the pitch, scoring two goals in the match for his team.
