Ghanaian footballer Thomas Partey, who is facing five charges of rape and one of sexual assault, has been released on conditional bail.
The charges relate to alleged offences committed between 2021 and 2022, during the period when Partey was playing for Arsenal. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The public reaction goes beyond the seriousness of the allegations themselves. Many football fans have expressed outrage that the charges were brought just four days after Partey’s contract with Arsenal ended and he left the club — a timing that is being viewed as highly suspicious.
There is speculation that had he remained with the Premier League side, his case might have been delayed once again.
Under the conditions of his release, Partey is prohibited from contacting the three women who have accused him of rape and sexual assault.
He is also required to inform police of any permanent change of address or plans to travel abroad.
Despite these serious developments, reports suggest that Partey has signed a 1+1 year contract with Spanish club Villarreal.
