Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey’s contract with Arsenal ended on June 30, and just four days after leaving the club, he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The situation sparked backlash against the English club, as the allegations dated back to 2021 and 2022. However, legal action was not taken until after Partey had departed from Arsenal.
The fact that the alleged victims are three different women further heightened the seriousness of the case. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta stated he is 100% confident the club followed the proper procedures despite the ongoing investigation:
“The club was very clear in its statement,” said Arteta. “There are very complicated legal matters here, so I cannot comment.”
Partey has denied the charges and described the case as an opportunity to clear his name.
His court hearing is scheduled for August 5 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
