Turkish defense giant ASELSAN has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with South Africa-based PAMODZI Group, marking a new phase in exporting not just military products but also advanced technology to the African continent. This initiative signals a broader transformation toward sustainable and knowledge-based defense partnerships in Africa.
According to the 85th issue of ASELSAN’s internal bulletin, the agreement includes a Technology Transfer Program (ToP) that enables the local production of the ASTELA P25 3710 Handheld Radio in South Africa. Unlike conventional exports, the agreement encompasses hardware sales, local manufacturing, engineering collaboration, and the sharing of technical expertise.
Beyond Equipment: Building Regional Capacity
This partnership underscores ASELSAN’s role as more than just a system supplier—it positions the company as a contributor to regional defense capacity-building. By fostering engineering infrastructure and technological know-how, ASELSAN strengthens the host country’s defense ecosystem.
Since establishing its regional office in 2011, ASELSAN has offered localized solutions, technical training, and joint projects with South African partners. Over the years, the company has evolved into a comprehensive technology partner, helping to enhance local defense and communications infrastructure.
A key highlight of the deal is the ASTELA radio system, which plays a critical role in public safety and emergency communications. Local production will ensure sustainable maintenance and operational continuity within South Africa and its surrounding regions.
A Model for Sustainable Cooperation
ASELSAN’s expanding presence in South Africa exemplifies a growing trend of strategic partnerships supporting African nations in developing their own defense industries. The transfer-of-technology model serves as a blueprint for long-term, sustainable, and mutually beneficial cooperation between Türkiye and African countries.
