The 2025 West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone ‘A’ Women’s Cup has officially kicked off. In the opening match of the tournament, Liberia faced Guinea-Bissau and secured a 3-1 victory.
Guinea-Bissau took an early lead in the 10th minute, but Liberia equalized before the end of the first half. Jessica Quachie stepped up in the 43rd minute to level the score. In the second half, Mimi Eiden scored twice to seal the win for Liberia.
Later in the day, Mali delivered a dominant performance, defeating host nation Mauritania with a commanding 5-0 scoreline.
Liberia will face Mauritania on May 24, while Mali will go up against Guinea-Bissau on the same day.
The tournament, held from May 22 to 31, also features Group B, which includes Guinea, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia.
Once all group-stage matches are completed, the tournament will move into the knockout phase.
