Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed conducted an official working visit to Paris on Thursday, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron. The visit follows a previous meeting between the two leaders held in Addis Ababa in December 2024.
The Office of the Prime Minister announced that Abiy is leading a high-level delegation to France, with an official welcome ceremony held at the Musée de l’Armée. Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the trip as a “working visit,” without providing additional specifics.
In a public statement, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized the importance of strengthening Ethiopia–France relations, particularly in areas of economic and commercial cooperation. “Our collaboration spans many vital areas, and enhancing commercial ties remains among the central priorities,” he stated on social media.
The visit comes at a time when Ethiopia is navigating multiple internal and external challenges. Ongoing conflicts in various regions, including Amhara and Oromia, continue to impact national stability. At the same time, the country faces economic pressures, including inflation and concerns raised by public sector employees over wages.
On the regional front, diplomatic relations with neighboring countries, including Eritrea, remain complex. Recent developments have drawn attention to shifting alliances and evolving dynamics in the Horn of Africa.
While the specific outcomes of the Paris discussions have not been publicly disclosed, the meeting signals continued diplomatic engagement between Ethiopia and France. According to reports, Prime Minister Abiy is also expected to make official visits to the United Kingdom and Italy in the near future.
