Cameroonian football legend Emmanuel Kundé has passed away.
The death of the legendary defender, who earned a total of 102 caps for the national team, was announced by the Cameroon Football Federation.
Kundé was part of the iconic 1990 Cameroon squad that became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of a FIFA World Cup. He also played in the teams that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984 and 1988. In fact, it was Kundé who took and scored the decisive penalty in the 1988 AFCON final.
The president of the country’s football federation, Samuel Eto’o, paid a condolence visit to the Kundé family following the news.
The federation’s statement read:
“Kundé was part of the golden generation that represented Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup in Italy — the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of a World Cup. FECAFOOT, along with the entire national football community, extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
