Algeria will serve as the host nation for the 44th Annual General Meeting and Housing Symposium of the Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB), set to take place from July 15 to 17, 2025, in the capital city of Algiers.
The event, which will be held at the Hotel El Aurassi, is expected to draw high-level delegations from across the continent, including government ministers, central bank officials, investors, and urban development experts. The focus will be on tackling Africa’s affordable housing deficit and strengthening strategies for sustainable urban development.
Under the theme “Housing Sector Financial Sustainability Amid Global Turbulence: Opportunities and Challenges,” this year’s meeting will address the financial and policy challenges faced by African countries in delivering affordable housing amid shifting global economic dynamics.
The summit will feature ministerial roundtables, policy dialogues, and technical forums designed to unlock investment, improve financing mechanisms, and promote public-private partnerships in the housing sector. Exhibitions and investor showcases will also highlight innovative projects and foster cross-border collaboration.
Shelter Afrique’s Managing Director and CEO, Thierno-Habib Hann, welcomed Algeria’s continued involvement, noting the country’s instrumental role in the institution’s recent transformation. “Algeria’s leadership has been critical, especially during the 2023 Extraordinary General Meeting, where our evolution into a development bank was formalized,” Hann said. “We are now building on that progress to ensure urban development is inclusive and economically empowering across Africa.”
The AGM will also review the bank’s performance, assess the impact of its strategic initiatives, and map out future priorities. Hann emphasized that the event will be pivotal in shaping the institution’s long-term direction. “With the continent’s rising demand for affordable, climate-resilient housing, we remain focused on scalable solutions that reflect Africa’s urban realities,” he added.
Established in 1981, Shelter Afrique Development Bank is a multilateral financial institution owned by 44 African countries, along with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Africa-Re. Its mandate is to finance affordable housing and urban infrastructure across the continent.
The bank operates through four specialized divisions: the Financial Institutions Group, Project Finance Group, Sovereign and Public-Private Partnerships Group, and Fund Management Group, offering support across the entire housing value chain.
The 2025 AGM in Algiers is expected to produce key resolutions that will reinforce ShafDB’s position as a central player in the continent’s urban transformation.
