The Government of Sudan has called on Somalia’s Federal Government to launch an immediate investigation into claims that Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in northeastern Somalia, is indirectly supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), an armed group deeply entrenched in Sudan’s civil conflict.
In a formal letter addressed to authorities in Mogadishu, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited intelligence from both domestic and international sources pointing to Puntland’s alleged provision of strategic and logistical assistance to the RSF. The complaint specifically identifies Bosaso Airport as a suspected transit hub used to facilitate the movement of personnel and military supplies linked to the group.
Sudanese officials further suggested that the support may be enabled by foreign actors, including the United Arab Emirates, raising concerns about external involvement in the worsening conflict.
The issue escalated following a public statement by Puntland’s Minister of Information, Mohamud Aydied Diriir, who rejected claims of involvement. Khartoum dismissed his remarks as a deliberate misrepresentation, accusing him of attempting to mask Puntland’s alleged role in enabling RSF operations.
Adding an international layer to the dispute, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry noted that Minister Aydied holds British citizenship. Consequently, the Sudanese Embassy in London has formally reached out to the UK government to discuss the implications of his statements.
Despite emphasizing its longstanding ties with the Somali people and federal authorities, Sudan warned that Puntland’s alleged involvement poses a serious risk to Sudan’s national security and could damage bilateral relations.
“The RSF has been implicated in extensive civilian harm and violence,” the foreign ministry stated. “Any political, logistical, or material backing to such entities undermines peace efforts and endangers stability across the region.”
Khartoum has urged Somali authorities to take decisive action, including a transparent investigation and a public reaffirmation of Somalia’s commitment to upholding Sudan’s sovereignty and fostering regional peace.
