Egypt has voiced strong support for Sudan following recent drone attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on key civilian infrastructure in Port Sudan, highlighting growing regional concern over the protracted conflict.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke with his Sudanese counterpart Omar Siddiq on Tuesday, reaffirming Egypt’s solidarity and condemning the RSF’s escalating offensive. The call came after Sudanese authorities reported a series of drone strikes on Port Sudan’s airport, seaport, and a hotel—described as a serious escalation by Sudanese military officials.
During the conversation, Abdelatty stressed the urgent need for de-escalation and called for a ceasefire to ensure the safe and effective delivery of humanitarian assistance. He emphasized Egypt’s continued support for Sudan’s sovereignty and stability, urging restraint on all sides.
Minister Siddiq welcomed Egypt’s consistent backing and underlined the importance of enhancing coordination and communication between the two nations in light of the worsening humanitarian situation.
In an earlier statement, Egypt also condemned RSF strikes on Kassala, labeling both attacks as a grave threat to Sudan’s national unity and efforts to provide relief to millions of civilians affected by the ongoing war.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating conflict between the national army, led by General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The violence has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced over 13 million people—8.6 million internally and nearly 4 million seeking refuge across borders.
Currently, Sudan’s army controls much of the central, eastern, and northern regions, while RSF forces dominate large areas of Darfur and parts of the south.
The latest wave of attacks underscores the deepening crisis and the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict and restore stability in Sudan.
