Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and his spouse Zinash Tayachew departed Hà Nội on Thursday afternoon, concluding their official visit to Vietnam and participation in the 4th Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit, held from April 14 to 17 at the invitation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính and his spouse.
The Ethiopian delegation was seen off at Nội Bài International Airport by Minister of Construction Trần Hồng Minh and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyễn Mạnh Cường.
During the visit, Prime Minister Abiy paid tribute to President Hồ Chí Minh at his mausoleum and laid wreaths at the Monument to War Heroes and Martyrs in Ba Đình District. He was received by key Vietnamese leaders, including Party General Secretary Tô Lâm and State President Lương Cường. Prime Minister Chính held an official welcome ceremony and talks with his Ethiopian counterpart, while National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn also met with the visiting leader.
On the morning of April 17, the two prime ministers and their spouses shared a breakfast, enjoyed traditional Vietnamese coffee, and visited iconic sites such as West Lake, Trúc Bạch Lake, and Trấn Quốc Pagoda.
Vietnamese leaders warmly welcomed the visit, noting its historic significance as the first official trip by an Ethiopian leader since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. They emphasized its importance in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, coinciding with Vietnam’s commemoration of 50 years of national reunification. The leaders reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening ties with African nations, including Ethiopia.
Prime Minister Abiy expressed deep admiration for Vietnam’s struggle for independence and its rapid development under the leadership of the Communist Party. He voiced interest in learning from Vietnam’s experience in sustainable development and environmental protection, and expressed confidence in Vietnam’s successful hosting of the P4G Summit, highlighting the country’s growing international stature.
As part of the visit, Madam Lê Thị Bích Trân and Madam Zinash Tayachew visited Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Secondary School for visually impaired students in Hà Nội.
Prime Minister Abiy also took part in the 4th P4G Summit, where he called for a fresh global approach that integrates climate action with inclusive development goals, particularly addressing the needs of vulnerable communities. He urged international partners to uphold their commitments through enhanced investment, technology transfer, and biodiversity protection efforts, especially in Africa.
At the summit’s conclusion, Vietnam officially handed over the role of host for the next P4G Summit in 2027 to Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy pledged his country’s dedication to advancing the P4G agenda, with a focus on green growth, energy transition, and inclusive development.
