South African Football Legend Benni McCarthy Appointed as Kenya National Team Head Coach
The Kenya Football Federation (FKF) has been working tirelessly to secure this agreement, and the official announcement is expected to be made on Friday.
After leaving his role as a first-team coach at Manchester United, Benni McCarthy received multiple offers from both clubs and national teams.
Despite strong interest from South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) and Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States, McCarthy has chosen to take charge of the Kenyan national team.
A Team in Crisis – A Race Against Time
The Harambee Stars failed to qualify for AFCON 2025 and have struggled in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, collecting only five points from four matches. With crucial fixtures against The Gambia and Gabon scheduled for March 17 and 24, McCarthy has a challenging task ahead with limited time to turn things around.
Kenya is also set to co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside Tanzania and Uganda, and McCarthy is expected to remain in charge during this important period for the national team.
A Proven Track Record in Coaching
The South African coach has already built an impressive managerial resume. He led Cape Town City to victory in the MTN8 Cup and guided AmaZulu to their first-ever CAF Champions League qualification, proving his ability to elevate teams to new heights.
A Legendary Playing Career
As a player, McCarthy was one of Africa’s most decorated footballers. Under Jose Mourinho, he won the 2004 UEFA Champions League with FC Porto, in addition to two Primeira Liga titles and a Taça de Portugal victory.
He also played for top European clubs such as Ajax, Celta Vigo, and West Ham United, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful African players of his generation.
A Grand Unveiling Awaits
The Kenya Football Federation (FKF) has planned a major event on Friday to officially introduce McCarthy as the new head coach.
Whether he can lead Kenya to success remains to be seen, but his appointment signals a new era for Kenyan football.
