The ninth edition of the Aswan International Women Film Festival (AIWFF) opened on Friday evening with a star-studded red-carpet ceremony, marking the beginning of a week-long celebration of women in cinema.
Held annually, the festival continues to draw attention to the pressing issues surrounding women’s rights, gender equality, and the role of women in the arts. The event, which attracts filmmakers, critics, and artists from across Egypt and around the world, offers a platform for showcasing films that tackle women’s causes and stories through powerful storytelling.
Running until May 7, this year’s festival features 55 films from over 30 countries, all vying for recognition in a range of competitive categories. Additionally, a special program will screen six British films, adding a unique international dimension to the festival’s diverse offerings.
The festival enjoys strong backing from Egypt’s ministries of culture and tourism, along with support from both local and global organizations, reflecting its growing impact on the cultural landscape. AIWFF also honors the enduring legacy of Egyptian music icon Umm Kulthum, dedicating this year’s edition to her in recognition of the 50th anniversary of her passing. The singer, known for her influence across the Arab world, remains a cultural symbol whose music continues to inspire.
Mohamed Abdel-Khalek, president and founder of the festival, shared his excitement about the growing international interest in the event. “The Aswan International Women Film Festival has become a key platform for those advocating for women’s rights and issues, both in Egypt and beyond. Our partnerships with organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union continue to strengthen, demonstrating the global reach and importance of this festival,” Abdel-Khalek said.
As the festival enters its ninth year, it remains an essential space for celebrating and elevating women’s voices, using the medium of film to foster dialogue, spark change, and highlight the continued struggles and achievements of women around the world.
