Google has pledged $37 million to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence across Africa.
This commitment also includes support for initiatives in the health and education sectors.
The company is launching an initiative called the “AI Collaborative for Food Security,” aimed at bringing together researchers and non-profit organizations.
The project will focus on early hunger detection, improving crop resilience, and developing decision-support systems for smallholder farmers. It marks an important step toward making food systems across the continent more resilient to climate and economic shocks.
Google also plans to launch a new funding platform to support AI-driven startups in the agriculture, health, and education sectors.
In addition, a $7 million fund has been created to expand AI education initiatives in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana.
The company has also announced a $3 million grant for Masakhane, a tech collective developing AI tools in more than 40 African languages.
As part of its broader investment, Google is also supporting AI-powered projects focused on maternal health technologies, wildfire alert systems in East Africa, and language model development in Accra and Nairobi.
